Kullanımı (Usage)

1. Simple past , geçmişte belirli bir zamanda başlamış ve bitmiş bir durum veya aktiviteyi işaret eder ([Dün akşam çok güzel bir komedi filmi izledim][I watched a good comedy film yesterday night]).
2. Geçmişte seri şeklinde yapılan işleri anlatırken kullanırızı([Ev ödevimi yaptım, sahile gittim ve yüzecek hoş bir yer buldum][I did my homework, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim]).
3. Simple Past Tense bir zaman diliminde başlayan ve biten olayı anlatırken de kullanılır ([Otuz dakika boyunca telefonda konuştuk][We talked on the phone for thirty minutes.])
4. Geçmiş alışkanlıklarımızı söylerken de Simple Past Tense'i kullanırız. "Used to" ile aynı anlama gelir. Alışkanlığın sona ermiş olması gerekir([Onlar hiç okula gitmezlerdi, sürekli kaçarlardı][They never went to school, they always skipped]).
Kuralları

Affirmative (positive)[olumlu]cümle kurarken kural;

''Subject + simple past form of verb(verb2) + complement''

şeklindedir. Özne ne olursa olsun fiilimizin 2. halini kullanırız. Simple Past Tense'i zor kılan durum ise her fiilin 2. halini bilmemiz gerekmesidir. Eğer kullanacağımız fiil düzenli (regular) ise; fiile "ed" takısı getirilir (I helped my mother in the kitchen yesterday). Bazı durumlarda bu takı eklenirken fiil kökünde veya ekde değişiklikler olur. Ayrıntılı bilgi için Eğer düzensiz (irregular) ise 2. hali kullanılır (She drank two bottles of milk this morning.). Fiillerin 2. ve 3. halleri hakkında detaylı bilgiyi buradan edinebilirsiniz. Daha sonra cümleyi tamamlarız.

Olumsuz (Negative) cümle kurarken kuralımız;

''Subject + didn't + verb1 + complement''

şeklindedir. Özne ne olursa olsun, fiilimizden önce "didn't" olumsuzluk önekini getiririz. Daha sonra fiilimizin yalın (infinitive) halini kullanırız.

Soru (Question) cümlelerinde kullanacağımız kural ise;

''Did + subject + verb1 + complement + ?''

şeklindedir. Özne ne olursa olsun cümle "did" ile başlar, özne kullanılır ve arkasından da fiil yalın (infinitive) halde kullanılır.
Confusing Verbs
raise, raised, raised (transitive)
 The supermarket raised its prices twice last week. 		rise, rose, risen (intransitive)
 Prices rose three times last week.
arouse, aroused, aroused (transitive)
The man's peculiar behaviour aroused the police's suspicion. 		arise, arose, arisen (intransitive)
Their suspicion arose because of the man's peculiar behaviour.
set, set, set (transitive)
We set the chair at the head of the table. 		sit, sat, sat (intransitive)
My father sat at the head of the table.
lay, laid, laid (transitive)
We laid the carpet after we'd painted the walls. 		lie,* lay, lain (intransitive)
I lay on the sofa after dinner and went to sleep.
bind, bound, bound (tie up)
He bound the dog to the fence with a long rope. 		bound, bounded, bounded ( I. border 2. jump)
Luxembourg is bounded by Germany.
The dog was bounding across the field.
find, found, found
I found your pen on top of the bridge. 		found, founded, founded (establish)
Atatürk founded the Republic of Turkey
grind, ground, ground (crush into powder)
In the past people ground wheat into flour using large stones. 		ground, grounded, grounded (compel to stay on the ground)
The authorities grounded the plane for checks.
wind, wound, wound (twist, turn)
He wound the string into a tight ball. 		wound, wounded, wounded (injure)
The gun shots wounded several people.
fall, fell, fallen
She fell as she was getting off the bus. 		fell, felled, felled (cut down)
They felled the tree because it was getting too big.
see, saw, seen
They saw an accident while driving to work. 		saw, sawed, sawed/sawn (cut with a saw)
He sawed the wood into equal lengths.
hang, hung, hung (suspend something)
They hung a flag from the window for Republic Day. 		hang, hanged, hanged (kill someone by hanging)
The leader of the Pakistani military coup, General Zia ul-Huq, hanged the President, Bhutto, in 1979.
*Lie "yalan söylemek" anlamındaysa, düzenli bir fiildir: She lied to us about her coming late.
Kullanılan Zaman Zarfları
Yesterday, yesterday morning, yesterday afternoon, last (week, year, etc.), ago (a month ago, three days ago, etc.), in 1986, after, before. Kısaca geçmiş zaman anlamı veren her zaman zarfı kullanılabilir.

A Series of Completed Actions
I finished work, walked to the park, and found a nice place to sit.
He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at 10:00.
Single Duration
 I lived in Brazil for two years.
Emre studied Japanese for five years.
They sat at the beach all day.
We talked on the phone for thirty minutes.
How long did you wait for them?
We waited for one hour.
Habit in the Past
 I studied French when I was a child.
He played the violin.
She worked at the movie theater after school.
They never went to school, they always skipped.
